We are into the last stretch. Not the last stretch of summer exactly, there is still all of August, but the last stretch of the part where it feels endless. Registration emails have started arriving. Somebody in your house has mentioned school supplies. It has begun.

Which is a decent argument for doing more this week rather than less.

Thursday is the interesting one. Oceanside's Sunset Market turns into a Fuji sister city celebration, so the usual four blocks of food and vendors get a Japanese overlay. It happens once a year and it is free.

And a housekeeping note that matters if you have been logging reading minutes since June: Carlsbad's Summer Reading Adventure ends Saturday. Details below, but do not let that one slide.

1. Sunset Market: Fuji Sister City Night The regular Thursday market, but Oceanside's sister city relationship with Fuji takes over for the evening. Expect Japanese food and performance layered onto the usual four blocks of vendors, plus Phil N the Blanks on the main stage. There is a dedicated children's area, and this is a once-a-year version of a weekly thing, so it is worth the trip even if you have done the market before.

3. Weds@Noon: Chiai Tajima and Alex Granger Today, and worth knowing about if you have a kid who plays an instrument. Fifty minutes, donation-based, and it draws 160-plus people every week, which is a real audience for a free lunchtime concert. It skews adult, so this is one for the kid who is actually into music rather than a general family outing.

3. Four O'Clock Fridays at Del Mar Free headliner concert once the last race is run. First post is 2 p.m. on Fridays this year, so the music starts earlier than it used to. General admission is $10 and the Coaster drops at Solana Beach with a free shuttle, which means this is doable without a parent driving.
