October showed up ready to work. Kids get free admission at more than 70 museums and attractions throughout the county. San Marcos is throwing an early Halloween party. Scripps Research is opening its campus for free science experiments. And Carlsbad’s normally friendly corn maze gets considerably less friendly after dark.

For the smallest kids, there’s a splash-fountain party, a quieter museum morning and a weekend at the farm. Little kids get costumes, scarecrows, LEGO monsters and an afternoon devoted to books. Big kids can pan for gold, dissect a squid and eat liquid-nitrogen ice cream. Teens have horror movies, haunted corn and an all-day jazz festival.

2. Sensory Friendly Morning The Children’s Museum of Discovery opens early with smaller crowds and quieter exhibits for children on the spectrum or anyone who does better with a calmer museum experience. Families can stay afterward and explore the museum when regular hours begin.

3. Pumpkin & Marigold Harvest Festival Mellano Farm Stand is opening its marigold fields and corn maze for a weekend of fall fun. There will also be seasonal activities, food, crafts and plenty of room for little kids to wander around the farm.

4. Kids Free October More than 70 museums, gardens, aquariums and historic sites throughout San Diego County are letting kids 12 and younger in free with a paid adult during October. Babies are already free at plenty of places, but this becomes a much better deal if they have older siblings tagging along.

4. Autumn Festival at the Safari Park The Safari Park is adding scarecrow performers, country dancing, live music, wildlife trivia and a walk-through maze to a regular day with the animals. 1. Bates Nut Farm Pumpkin Festival Craft Fair More than 50 artisans are setting up alongside Bates’ enormous pumpkin patch for a weekend of crafts, food and live music. Scripps Research Discovery Day Scientists and graduate students are filling the Scripps Research campus with hands-on demonstrations covering chemistry, neuroscience, viruses, cancer biology and drug discovery. Kids can look at cells through microscopes, explore the microscopic world through virtual reality and try liquid-nitrogen ice cream.

The organizers say most of the scientist-led activities are best for ages 8 and older, which makes this one feel unusually well matched to the big-kid section.

3. Rendezvous in Poway Old Poway Park is heading back to the 1800s with historical encampments filled with pioneers, cowboys, mountain men and other characters from the era. Kids can pan for gold, watch demonstrations and ride the train for a small additional fee.

4. Sunset Scripps Pier Walk Birch Aquarium educators are taking families onto the normally closed Scripps Pier for a behind-the-scenes look at the research happening over and beneath the ocean. Kids examine plankton under microscopes, learn about local sharks and dissect a squid—which should make the complaints about regular science homework seem a little less convincing.

1. Haunted Corn Maze Carlsbad Strawberry Company waits until dark, adds a collection of things designed to jump out at you and turns its daytime corn maze into something considerably less relaxing. The organizers specifically recommend it for teenagers and adults, so this one is meant to be legitimately scary.

2. Teen Horror Film Fest Vista Library is showing a PG-13 horror movie and supplying the pizza and candy. The exact movie isn’t announced, but the event is specifically for teens ages 13–17 and gives younger teenagers somewhere to hang out without needing an adult-priced night on the town.

4. Trolley Dances This is not a normal theater performance. A guide takes the audience on and off the San Diego trolley to watch more than 50 dancers perform original pieces in unexpected locations around the city.

It’s farther south, but the combination of public transit, live performance and constantly changing settings makes it one of the more unusual options this week.

5. San Diego–Tijuana International Jazz Festival The festival takes over the California Center for the Arts with performers from both sides of the border, including five-time Grammy winner Brian Blade, Danilo Pérez and the Mingus Dynasty. Families can catch two outdoor performances for free, while the main concert-hall sets require tickets.

Food trucks will be available during the dinner break, and parking is free.
