Mid-July is the honest part of summer. The first few weeks had novelty on their side. Camp was new, the pool was exciting, and nobody had said "I'm bored" yet. Week five is different. The pool is just the pool now. The good camps are between sessions. And inland is running hot enough that anything after 2 p.m. needs shade or air conditioning attached to it.
So this week pulls in two directions: things that get you out early or after sunset, and things that happen indoors while the afternoon burns itself off.
Also, Del Mar opens Friday. Whatever you think about racing season, it is the marker that tells North County summer has actually arrived.

Small World: Puppets in the Garden, Lapsit Songs and Bees at Eye Level
1. Grandma Kathy's Tales & Tunes A puppet show and singalong that has been running long enough to have regulars. Thirty minutes, which is exactly the right length before a two-year-old is done. Go early and let them loose in Seeds of Wonder afterward, before the heat lands.

4. Botanic Exploration Stations Volunteer-run discovery tables set up around the garden. The current station is pollinators, so bees and butterflies at toddler eye level. Drop in, no registration, and it runs three mornings a week if Friday does not work.

Yacht Rock and Story Hours: Crafts on the Grass, Rhymes Inland and a Saturday in Spanish
1. TGIF Concerts in the Parks: Harbor Party Yacht rock this week, which sounds like a joke until you are lying on a blanket at 7 p.m. with a breeze and a kid who has finally stopped moving. The gates open at 4, the pop-up art booth opens at 5:15 with crafts, and dance lessons start at 6. Bring a picnic, there are no food vendors this year.

3. Cruisin' Grand Five hundred pre-1974 American classics parked along Grand Avenue, plus live bands and every restaurant downtown spilling onto the sidewalk. Somewhere between five and ten thousand people show up. It is free, it is loud, and it is the kind of thing an eleven-year-old talks about for a week.

1. Del Mar Opening Day The season starts Friday and Opening Day is its own spectacle, hats and all. Note that Fridays moved to a 2 p.m. first post this year, earlier than it used to be. Take the Coaster to Solana Beach and use the free shuttle rather than fighting Via de la Valle.

2. Tramonto Music Festival Three nights of chamber and classical music at the Encinitas Library, directed by pianist Jacopo Giacopuzzi. Friday's program closes with Italian film themes, including The Godfather, Cinema Paradiso and The Mission, which is the accessible way in for a teenager who thinks classical is not for them.

3. Sunset Market The teenage version of the same market listed above: go later, go with friends, eat your way down four blocks. 39 Fingers is on the main stage this week. This is one of the few places in North County where a group of fifteen-year-olds can be out on a weeknight without anyone needing to drive them somewhere else.
