Let’s start with something for the parents this week.

Oceanside is hosting a four-hour Kid’s Night Out for ages 6–12. You drop the kids off for pizza, games and activities, then go have dinner—or go home and enjoy four uninterrupted hours of doing absolutely nothing.

It’s $37 per child. That works out to $9.25 an hour, which is a whole lot cheaper than paying a babysitter $20 an hour to watch Netflix while your kids watch Netflix in the other room. And the kids will probably have more fun too.

Elsewhere this week, families can stomp grapes in Julian, see hundreds of European cars at Frontwave Arena, watch swimmers race around the Oceanside Pier or catch the Padres and Yankees downtown.

1. Tortoise Talk Meet Sebastian, the Children’s Museum of Discovery’s 57-year-old desert tortoise, and learn how he survives in the wild. The talk is included with admission, so you can stay afterward and explore the rest of the museum.

2. Wonderful World of Music Babies and toddlers explore songs, dances, puppets and instruments from around the world in Nightingale Music School’s new fall session. Classes are separated by age, with options for infants, toddlers and preschoolers.

3. Baby Storytime Babies can enjoy songs and stories followed by playtime with other little ones, while parents get a chance to meet and talk. The Solana Beach Library hosts this free program for babies up to 18 months old.

2. Del Mar Family Fun Day Del Mar is adding bungee trampolines, rock-climbing walls, inflatable games, face painting and miniature horses to an afternoon at the races. The attractions are free once you’re inside, and kids 17 and younger receive free racetrack admission with a parent or guardian.

4. Hispanic Heritage Festival The City of Carlsbad is bringing live cultural performances, baile folklórico, lotería and hands-on art projects together for a free afternoon. Kids can make Ojo de Dios artwork and flag ornaments while families enjoy the performances.

3. 97th Annual Labor Day Pier Swim and Expo Serious swimmers can take on a full mile around the Oceanside Pier, while everyone else watches from the beach and visits the free vendor expo. Registration is open to all ages, but the swim itself is only appropriate for kids who are already capable and confident in the open ocean.

4. Julian Grape Stomp Festa Take off your shoes, roll up your pants and help turn a pile of grapes into something considerably less appealing to walk through. Julian’s annual festival also has live entertainment, food and vendors at Menghini Winery. Not north county but it’s supposed to be only like 75 in Julian Saturday so you can also escape the heat!

5. The Sky Tonight: Falling into Fall The Fleet’s resident astronomer explains why the seasons change and what planets and constellations families can find in the fall sky. Afterward, the San Diego Astronomy Association plans to set up telescopes outside near the fountain, weather permitting. Also not north county but also a pretty cool option.

6. K-pop Connect K-pop fans can spend an hour watching Stray Kids music videos, talking about their favorite groups and making a themed craft. Oceanside Public Library created this one specifically for K-pop fans ages 8–17.

Clash of Clans: Clash for the Stache Clash of Clans has turned part of Seaport Village into a real-life village where teams follow the Archer Queen through interactive games to defeat the Goblin King. 3. Rock of Ages Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and other ’80s rock hits are packed into a PG-13 musical about two aspiring performers trying to save Hollywood’s Sunset Strip. San Diego Musical Theatre’s production has a live band, big vocals and enough teased hair to make the drive south worthwhile.
