Happy Wednesday, families!

This is the best week of the summer so far, and it is not close.

Sunday alone has two things worth building a day around, both of them free or nearly. Friday has an all-female salsa orchestra playing a Carlsbad park for nothing. And Vista's chocolate factory closes Saturday, so if you have been meaning to get there, this is it.

One planning note before we start. Two of this week's best items land on the same Sunday afternoon, one in Del Mar and one in Encinitas, about twenty minutes apart. You can technically do both. We would not. Pick one, stay for the whole thing, and let the other one go.

1. Grandma Kathy's Tales & Tunes Thirty minutes of puppets and singing, every Friday, same time. For this age the sameness is the point. They learn the songs, they start anticipating the puppets, and by week four they are the ones running toward the front.

3. Escondido Certified Farmers' Market Downtown on Juniper, produce and prepared food and local honey, and enough space that a toddler can walk the length of it without you losing your mind. It runs from mid-afternoon to sunset, so go late when the heat breaks rather than at the start.

4. Botanic Exploration Stations Volunteer-run discovery tables scattered through the garden, currently on pollinators. No registration, no start time, no pressure. You wander, you stop when they stop, you leave when it stops working.

1. Del Mar Family Fun Day The one to plan around. Kids 17 and under get in free, and the infield fills up with games, face painting and inflatable attractions alongside a full day of racing. Most families never think of the track as a kid destination, which is exactly why this works. Get there early, park before the crowd, and let them run.

Take the Coaster to Solana Beach and use the free shuttle. It runs every fifteen minutes and beats the Via de la Valle crawl.

2. TGIF Concerts in the Parks: Sabrosas Latin Orchestra San Diego's first all-female salsa band, playing a Carlsbad park for free. This is the one that turns into a dance party, and it is the single most kid-friendly concert of the whole TGIF season. Site opens at 4, art booth at 5:15, dance lessons at 6.

3. Little Explorers with Mrs. Garcia Aimed at 3 to 5, so it catches the kids who have aged out of toddler storytime but are not in school yet. Monday morning, which is a useful reset after a loose weekend.

4. Summer Learning Challenge County-wide, and it does not require reading 30 books to get something. Ten books, ten hours of reading, or ten learning activities gets you a tote, a book, and museum or fair coupons, plus entry into the grand prize drawing. 1. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: final weekend Closes Saturday. Full production, live orchestra, outdoors at Brengle Terrace. Take the lawn seats and bring a picnic rather than paying for reserved, it is cheaper and considerably more relaxed with kids who may need to shift around.

2. Summer Nights at the Garden: The Surf Birdz The Botanic Garden stays open into the evening for this, which is the only time all week the place is both cool and lit up. Surf rock, which lands well with this age, and the gardens are still walkable during the set.

3. Cruisin' Grand Five hundred pre-1974 American classics along Grand Avenue, live bands, and every restaurant downtown spilling onto the sidewalk. Between five and ten thousand people. Themed nights rotate through the season, so it is worth checking what this Friday's theme is before you go.

1. Moonlight Beach Concerts: Slack Key ʻOhana Free, on the sand, and the reason to flag it for teenagers specifically is the opener. Uncle Tims are a garage rock band formed last year by two high school best friends, playing a real stage in front of a real crowd. Then Slack Key ʻOhana bring Hawaiian slack key guitar, ukulele and sometimes hula and fire dancers. Openers at 1, headliner at 3.

2. Four O'Clock Fridays at Del Mar Once the last race is run, the track puts on a free headliner concert. It pulls a crowd well beyond the racing regulars and it is one of the few reliably teenage-feeling things in North County on a Friday night. Note that first post moved to 2 p.m. this year, so the racing ends earlier than it used to.
